The quality of this DVD is terrible. Not widescreen. The video hasn't been cleaned up. Not SurroundSound... not even in stereo. It looks like it was dubbed from a second-hand video library video.

Ashes of Time is one of my most favourite movies. A multi-award winning movie (14th HK film awards). From a director who won the cannes film festival (for Happy Together). To see it produced with so little respect makes me very sad. It is a crime against humanity.

If someone would let me, I would personally spend weeks restoring the video for free. This movie deserves better.

beautiful, but format counts
This is without doubt my favourite Wong Kar-Wai film. It was brilliantly executed, beautifully set, and the story is very well thought out.

I'll have to agree with the previous post, however - the DVD edition of this movie is a travesty. They put a black bar over the old subtitles to make the new ones more readable - at the expense of 20% of the screen. The transfer is horrible, too.

My hearty recommendations for the VHS version, though - perhaps one day Tai Seng will do the DVD community justice with this title.

Don't watch this US release version!!!
This film is awesome, but this version of the DVD is horrible. You have to see the Hong Kong version. This version by World Video has lots of digital glitches, shots missing, is out of sync at parts and has a big black bar with new bad English subtitles to cover up the original Chinese and English subtitles. Get the Hong Kong version and watch it.
