American Pop Reviews

American Pop Art FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
This was an innovative movie in 1981. You will hear some critics make light of the story or music. Consider this, these are probably the same people that thought Disney's "Pocahontas was great. No offense I like Pocahontas but it is about as close to the true events as Gilligan was to discussing relativity with Einstein. Quite honestly "American Pop" is still very impressive now. Not only did Bakshi utilize a great method of animation which no one else tried to do at this length, he made a difficult story come to life. Is it likely that one family would have so much musical talent? Probably not, but this is a story, and it is not outside of the realm of what if. Trying to cover such an expanse of historical time with such economy of screen time is amazing. At the time of it's original release it was not overly popular. It got poor reviews for the most part because of what was going on in the world and he had made punk look bad which was popular at that time. His popularization of Bob Seger was in fact sort of visionary since a couple years later Bruce Springsteen became a legend. I would say Springsteen is far closer to Seger than punk wouldn't you? I tell you my age when I say I saw this in the theater. I have followed Ralph Bakshi's works closely since I first saw "Fritz the Cat" in the theater and it was an X rated then. He has progressively gotten better. "Wizards" and this are two of my favorites. It is surprizing how many great animation works of the 70s and 80s have been overlooked by those into Japanimation. You can imagine how happy I am to see some of the younger reviewers that apparently understand all the complexities of the work are writing good reviews on this movie. Perhaps the fact so many have known such a variety of animation in their lifetime they appreciate older works like this one. Considering it is now hit it's twenty-fifth anniversary I think it holds up well.
