This is an excellent movie. I highly recommend it. I just love that quote though.
Unfair to Salieri
Was anyone else annoyed with the "American-teenager" accent and colloquialisms that Tom Hulce used in this movie? I remember watching the original theater-released version in 1984 and being so distracted by his portrayal of Mozart that it made it hard to really fully appreciate this movie. I still can't understand why he got an Oscar nomination.
F. Murray Abraham, however, really put his heart into the role, and the movie shines mostly because of his acting. The music brings me to tears each time I've watched it. This version, the "Director's Cut," adds a new dimension to Salieri's supposedly hateful psyche, which I found stunning.
One thing that really bothers me is that the movie is totally fictionalized. It really plays on rumors going around following Mozart's death that Salieri had a hand in it, or that they even had an antagonistic relationship. Salieri was anything but "mediocre." In real life he was the teacher of such greats as Beethoven, Schubert, and Liszt, as well as having taught music to Mozart's son. If you research Salieri on the Web, you'll see how maligned his name has become as a result of this movie. Knowing that has sort of tarnished this beautifully-crafted movie for me. It just doesn't seem fair to ruin the man's name for the sake of artistic license.
