Better off dead...
This is the final installment in the ALIEN series - if we don't count ALIEN VS. PREDATOR which is more a PREDATOR film than an ALIEN film. While it is no great film, it is a marked improvement on ALIEN 3. The storyline requires a huge suspension of disbelief, even more so than all 3 of the predecessors. But, if you can get by that, you can have some fun.
This film, under the direction of Jean-Pierre Jeunet (AMELIE') is a visually creative film with more than its share of action and gross-outs. As for the aliens themselves, they receive a lot more screen time than in earlier efforts. One of the most intense scenes in the film involves an underwater chase between our heroes and the little beasties. They prove to be very hydrodynamic.
The saddest of the aliens is a little baby who has parts of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver revived in her signature role) in its DNA. This flesh colored Alien is pretty disgusting, mewing and purring to its mother before ripping someone else's brain apart. Winona Ryder (BEETLEJUICE) also joins the story as an android with a heart-of-gold. Others of note are from the cast of Jeunet's cult film THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN. This film follows the spirit of the first 2 films and is a better end to the series than the previous ending, ALIEN 3.
The DVD has a great audio/video transfer with none of the burnt look so apparent in ALIEN 3. It also includes a very brief press-junket style documentary.
say what you will about it...
This is a genuine film with plenty of thrills..chills.. and it's worth the watch, that is..if you're into thrills and chills. I think it was a great idea, personally because it stems from some really epic sized films, and it's not a stem root of them, but it is derived so you come up with the new, improved ripley, and improved aliens from all the genetic research done by those mad scientists. Putting in my 2 cents, this is a good movie overall, great visual effects. -a movie fan
Somebody should have said 'enough'.
This movie plays more like a comic book than anything else.
The ONLY redeeming quality is the aliens themselves. So, if you're into special effects, watch it only for that.
Poor story, weak acting and lack of direction make this a waste. The only one of the alien series I found to be worse was Alien vs. Predator... they really should be ashamed of themselves. Neither this one nor vs. predator even have 'B' movie quality.
