Akira Reviews
When that power is awakened...You must choose how to use it
A feast of color. Amazing cityscape backgrounds. Reflections. Light trails and
bone crunching violence at street bike speed. The amount of destruction and chaos
in just the first 10 minutes! Taking in the sheer amount of animation on display
is what can be so easily raved about. A work of animation where there are scenes of
ten or more people walking or running. And they actually look like they are walking
or running! They aren't floating, they don't appear to all be gliding in step or are
lacking in so much detail that they all seem to be one and the same. If you've
seen any one of the numerous animated on a time/money budget works, e.g.,
an average Anime tv series, you know what I mean here. ugh.
Akira doesn't cheat the viewer in this regard. This was done with an attention to
detail and a sense of visual style.
When the character "Tetsuo" thinks he is imagining seeing a large teddy bear
assembling from various toys right before his eyes, and it starts to drip and
has an evil looking rabbit beside it, and they both start to disassemble/fall
apart into two old looking kids; Large lego blocks tumble and an evil walking
car shows up as he attempts to get away from all of this... This is just a small
part of what all my fuss is about.
As for the setting, story and backdrop... this is NOT for children, it's graphic,
physically violent, explosive and bright red bloody. Neo Tokyo, old looking children,
scientists, doctors, the military, rival biker gangs, unemployment strikes, anti-
government terrorist bombings are all gathered. From what I understand there is
much more than what is presented here. And again, I will eventually find my way to
the manga version for the big picture.
I Want the Original English Back, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you have seen this movie when it came out like i did then this is a big deal!!! what was wrong with the english dialouge that it had to be re-recorded??!! i saw this at a local theater here in san antonio when it came out years ago, and when it came out on DVD i snatched it up to my dismay i realized that it had a new audio track. what a travesty, it has never been the same. a classic destroyed!! you wouldn't replace the audio to Casablanca would you?
