Great concept, poorly executed FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
Poor writing and direction push what should be a heart-warming family film deep into hackneyed mediocrity.

Geena Davis and Lori Petty give the strongest performances, but it's not enough to call this a "good" film.

This isn't a winner...... FULL SKULL BABY! empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff. empty skull, sniff.
I've seen this movie. Even with Tom Hanks, Jon Lovitz and Geena Davis staring in it. I just couldn't enjoyed it. I found that both Madonna's character and Rosie O'Donnell's character were just flat awful. It took away from the movie, itself.

Nice way to spend an afternoon FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY! FULL SKULL BABY!
A League of Their Own is a really nice little movie that didn't get the respect it deserved with it was released.

Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) are sisters living on their parent's farm in Oregon during WWII while Dottie's husband is fighting overseas. They are approached by a baseball scout and invited to tryouts for the first All American Girls Professional Baseball Leagues (AAGPBL). The league has been formed by the owners of the men's baseball league in an effort to make a profit during the war (the men's league is shut down since most of the players have been drafted). Dottie does not want to go but finally agrees since she's the better player and the scout won't take Kit (who does want to go) without her. They make the team and spend the next year traveling the country playing baseball, dealing with a moody manager, skeptical fans, and sibling rivalry along the way.

The performances are all great but the stand-out is Tom Hanks as the alcoholic and grumpy manager. As usual, he gives his all to the role and is a delight to watch. The women on the baseball team all have a good chemistry together, especially Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell. And they're all pretty good ball players! I was impressed when I learned the actors did almost all of their own stunts and all the injuries you see on film are real.

What makes this movie great is the WWII backdrop. The spirit of the country at the time is very well portrayed and I felt it brought the experience of the war years home to those of us who didn't live it. One scene where a teammate learns her husband has been killed in action is particularly heart-wrenching.

In all, this is a fun, very well-done movie and you won't regret the time you spend watching it.
