13 Going on 30
In 1987, after a disasterous thirteenth birthday party, Jenna Rink wishes she could just be 30 years old and skip the next seventeen years. A sprinkle of pixie dust gives her that wish, and when she awakens, she quickly finds out that her with has come true. The year is 2004, and Jenna (Garner) is an editor for Poise magazine and best friends with Lucy (Greer), the popular girl from her teenage years. In a panic, she seeks out her childhood best friend Matt (Ruffalo). Unfortunately for her, their friendship ended badly years ago. Reluctantly, he agrees to help her, and Jenna soon discovers feelings for him that she never had before.
Yes, we have seen this movie before. Big, anyone? But what this movie has that really makes it enjoyable is Jennifer Garner. She imbues thirty year old Jenna with the spirit of a thirteen year old. Her channelling of her inner child is what really makes this movie work. Also, the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. After all, the "time travel" is accomplished with pixie dust. This is a sweet and funny movie that shows Jennifer Garner can do comedy as well as action.
Rises above its flaws
It's 1987, and Jenna Rink wants to be popular. On her thirteenth birthday, she makes a wish to be thirty. The next day, she wakes up and her wish has come true. There is one major problem though...she has no memory of the past seventeen years.
Jennifer Garner is excellent as a thirteen-year-old trapped in a thirty-year-old body. But the movie comes to an abrupt conclusion. (We know it will have a happy ending, but it becomes a question of how we will reach that ending.)
The story has heart, but it loses touch every once in a while by forgetting that Jenna is a thirteen-year-old trapped in an older version of herself. Fortunately, '13 Going on 30' rises above its flaws to be an entertaining for movie for all.
Rated PG-13. Mild language, brief (suggested) sexual content.
HOOKS YOU EMOTIONALLY
Jennifer Garner has the best smile in the business and she was tailor-made for this movie. She's a 30-something actress that has the spirit of a teenager and a funloving personality that fits this movie like a glove. Jennifer Garner needed a movie like this to show off her fun side.
Once Garner appears on the screen, you can't take your eyes off her. The sign of an actress who is destined for great things.
In 13 GOING ON 30, Garner plays Jenna Rink, a typical teenager who's caught up in being popular and is searching for an identity. The movie is about choices, regrets and life courses.
Despite its commonality to movies like BIG, FREAKY FRIDAY and WISH UPON A STAR, 13 GOING ON 30 hooks you into its characters, and that is it's greatest attribute. You feel the emotions and you get caught up in the storyline. Although the Wish Dust storyline was a little corny. Despite that, the movie is golden in the sense that the characters are vivid, charming and ultimately relateable.
If you're looking to smile, and maybe cry a little, or just looking to escape for a couple hours. There's no better movie than 13 GOING ON 30 to do that.
